Judge Selection & Eligibility Document (U.S.)

About the Role

  Roast League is a live debate and entertainment series blending humor, intellect, and audience engagement. Our judges play a vital role in ensuring fair scoring, maintaining professionalism, and preserving the event’s spirited yet respectful tone.
Becoming a Roast League Judge means representing integrity, fairness, and fun.

1. Eligibility Criteria

  To be considered as a Judge for the Roast League, applicants must meet the following requirements:


Basic Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years old and legally able to work or volunteer in the United States.
  • Be fluent in English     (multilingual fluency is a plus).
  • Be able to attend at least one in-person taping or live event in the DMV area (Washington, DC      / Maryland / Virginia).
  • Have no ongoing legal restrictions that prevent public or broadcast participation.
  • Agree to be filmed, photographed,      and featured in Roast League promotional materials.


Professional or Relevant Background


Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:


  • Background in entertainment,      comedy, debate, public speaking, journalism, or sports commentary.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate performance objectively.
  • Previous experience as a host, panelist, or judge in public events or media productions.
  • Understanding of sports culture, pop culture, or trending social topics.

2. Selection Criteria & Measurement

 Each applicant will be evaluated based on:

   

Communication Skill

Clarity, confidence, and charisma   during interviews/auditions

Analytical & Fair Judgment

Ability to assess debates   objectively and articulate reasoning

Personality & Entertainment   Value

Energy, relatability, humor, and   crowd engagement

20%

 

Professionalism & Conduct

Reliability, punctuality, and   adherence to event guidelines

Diversity & Representation

Contribution to the balance of   perspectives on the panel

15%


Judges will be pre-screened through a short video call or an in-person audition   

and may be selected for either guest, rotational, or seasonal judging roles.

3. Roles & Responsibilities

 Judges agree to:

  • Attend scheduled rehearsals and event briefings.
  • Provide fair, unbiased scoring during live or recorded debates.
  • Respect audience, debaters, and production staff at all times.
  • Offer brief commentary or feedback during shows when required.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding results or show details before public release.
  • Represent the Roast League brand professionally both onsite and online.
  • Comply with all venue, broadcast, and production rules.

4. Rights of the Judge

  Judges are entitled to:

  • Be treated with respect and professionalism by all staff and participants.
  • Receive timely communication regarding schedules, expectations, and logistics.
  • Withdraw their candidacy before signing the final contract.
  • Request clarification on scoring criteria or event conduct guidelines.
  • Be credited and recognized publicly in show materials or digital platforms.
  • Receive honorarium or travel reimbursement (where applicable) as stated in the official contract.

5. Code of Conduct

  Roast League is a platform for intelligent humor, not hostility.

Judges must:

  • Remain impartial and avoid favoritism.
  • Refrain from using offensive, discriminatory, or defamatory language.
  • Avoid conflicts of interest (no judging relatives, partners, or affiliated debaters).
  • Uphold confidentiality for all internal communications and production materials.
  • Abstain from recording or sharing behind-the-scenes content without permission.

Violation of this code may lead to immediate dismissal and forfeiture of participation or payment.

6. Liability & Indemnity

  By applying, judges acknowledge that:

  • Roast League is a live event and may involve unpredictable audience or participant behavior.
  • Judges participate at their own risk and must follow all safety instructions provided.
  • Afroac / Roast League shall not be held liable for personal injury, loss, or damages except in cases of proven negligence.
  • Judges agree to indemnify the organizers against any claims arising from their conduct or statements during the event.

7. Media & Image Release

  All judges consent to:

  • The recording, filming, photography, and live streaming of their participation.
  • The use of their image, voice, and likeness for promotional, commercial, or archival purposes without additional compensation, unless otherwise specified in the official agreement.
  • Granting Roast League the right to edit and distribute content globally across media platforms.

8. Confidentiality

  Judges will have access to internal scripts, scoring details, and event formats.
Disclosure of such information without authorization may result in legal action or removal from future participation.

9. Acknowledgment

  By submitting the form below, applicants acknowledge:

  • They have read and understood this document.
  • They agree to comply with all terms herein.
  • Final selection is at the discretion of the Roast League Production Team.
